I would like to share some wonderful, inspiring news a client recently shared with me. Permission to share these medical results with you has been granted, however, for her confidentiality, I will leave her name out. 

Let me start by telling you some vital information. She is a 62 year old physically fit Pilate hottie who started coming to classes in early 2008. After her second class, I recall her saying that she would do her best to finish the 10 sessions she signed up for, but it was harder than she thought and didn't know if she would continue. She still is and was an avid walker when we met.  Pilates was something she had added to her fitness routine to tone, gain strength and flexibility. She was not there to lose any weight, she was already at her perfect weight for her frame and height.  I am proud to say, some years have past since her first class and she is still committed to attending her Pilate sessions.

She is stronger, toner and more flexible than when we first met. Pilates exercises also claim to make you stronger from the inside out. I am so happy to report she is living proof of that statement. We often concern ourselves on what we look like on the outside, since we can't see inside of our bodies we don't give it much thought. We only think about out internal health when we are forced to because of an illness or pain. But, in order to be fit outside we must take care of what is going on inside first, hence the philosophy making you stronger from the inside out.  

At the age of 57, in 2006, she was diagnosed with osteoporosis and had increased risk for the development of fractures related to decreased bone mineral density. The only thing she did differently was start attending Pilate Mat sessions 3-4 times per week in 2008. In 2009, she had a follow up test which revealed that she had a 4.1% increase in her bone mineral density since her baseline test in 2006. Her last test on 11/2011 revealed a whopping 10.3% increase when compared to 2006. Her bone mineral density lumbar spine increased another 6% since 2009. As per the Dr., this is statistically significant, he wanted to know what she was doing. 

Well, Pilates of course!!

As we age, decreased bone density is expected. That is not happening with this individual, her bone density has been increasing each year!!!

Anything challenging we try at first may seem beyond our reach. Possibly why so many people have a hard time committing to exercise routines.  It doesn't happen overnight, it takes commitment and dedication to improve our overall health and well being. If she can do it, so can you.
